City Administration:  This past Thursday and Friday, January 24 & 25, I attended the William “King” Cole Local Government Series at the headquarters of the Texas Municipal League in Austin. This two-day workshop addresses the fundamentals of city management and is designed especially for new city officials who are involved in the day-to-day operations. The topics in this educational program included: Making the most of networking opportunities; a History of the city management profession; Basic duties of a city manager; the Ethical realities of public service; Council/Manager/Staff Relations; Fundamentals of Budgeting and Finance; and Municipal Law 101.

Code Enforcement:  Code Enforcement is preparing to conduct a survey of all properties in Electra in order to create a benchmark by which to mark future progress.

Grand Theatre, Inc.: Annual meeting of Electra Grand Theatre, Inc. will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, with time and place to be announced.  Repairs to the proscenium arch will be the Board’s focus for 2013, and all volunteers are welcomed.

Main Street: The Main Street office will be closed Jan. 30-Feb. 1 for Texas Main Street program’s Annual Meeting.  Next meeting of the Main Street Advisory Board will be Wednesday, Feb. 20th at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.  The Board will review and complete their 2013 work plan at that time.

Police: The Electra Police Department has hire two new officers.  The newest full-time officer is Matthew Wood, originally from Vernon.  He graduated from Vernon High School in 2005, and joined the Army in 2006, where he served in operation Iraqi freedom with the infantry division as an infantry rifleman.  After his honorable discharge in 2009, he attended Cedar Valley Law Enforcement academy in Lancaster, Texas.  Before coming to Electra, Wood worked for about two years at the Balch Springs Police Department in Dallas County.  The PD has also hired a part-time officer, Gary Ellis, who is a full-time security guard at the Allred Unit, and has been since 1999.  He has also been working as a reserve deputy in Clay County for two and a half years, as well as working as a kennel assistant training blood hounds for local law enforcement.  The Electra PD is excited to have such valuable assets join the force, and welcomes the new officers to town.
