The Public Works Department is committed to providing high quality services to the residents of our community. Our personnel are committed to anticipating and identifying problems and needs within our community and the development and implementation of creative and innovative solutions. Services include the following:
- Delivery of water for potable, industrial, and fire suppression use that meets or exceeds federal and state health and welfare standards.
- Collection, treatment, and disposal of the community's wastewater in a manner that meets environmental protection requirements.
- Maintaining and repairing the network of streets, street signs, sidewalks, drainage systems, and retaining walls throughout our community.
- Maintenance of our local cemeteries, parks and city buildings in a manner consistent with the expectation of the City Commission and citizens of Electra.
Streets
The Public Works Department is committed to maintaining and repairing the network of streets, sidewalks, traffic control devices, storm drainage facilities, and street appurtenances throughout the city. We are committed to constantly training our personnel to ensure that these systems are maintained in the best condition possible. The safety of the general public in the use of these systems is of paramount importance.
Mosquito Abatement
The Public Works Department is responsible for seasonal mosquito abatement including reporting incidences of private or public mosquito hazards to the Wichita County Health Department and local Code Enforcement. The abatement process includes a combination of licensed spraying of mosquito spray, larvacide applications and removal of hazards as ordered by the Municipal Court and Code Enforcement Official.
Convenience Center
The Public Works Department is responsible for operating and maintaining the city's convenience center which operates as a local drop-off point for brush, limbs, grass clipping and some debris. It is also certified to accept used oil at no charge for City residents. The Convenience Center is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm and accepts material for a charge. The material disposed of at this center is taken by the regional solid waste contractor to their Iowa Park Landfill for final disposal. The city pays IESI to perform this function and transfer the debris to this landfill.

Water

In 2007, the City of Electra completed a major water project, connecting Electra with the City of Wichita Falls. This effectively ended over 50 years of water shortages and provided the opportunity to upgrade a great deal of the water distribution system. In 2009, the City completed the water distribution system upgrades with new pipe throughout much of the community, and upgrades to the water towers. These major projects were structured to provide the water needed to help Electra grow and prosper for many years to come.
The purpose of the Water Utility is to
- insure that the treatment, storage, transmission and distribution of water is done in a professional manner which protects the public's health requirements
- to provide potable water that is satisfactory for drinking in its physical, chemical and biological characteristics
- to produce adequate quantities of water to meet the demands for consumption, industrial uses, and fire suppression in a cost effective manner that preserves the public's investment in the water system. All of this is done in accordance with EPA and TCEQ regulations.
Sewer Utility
The purpose of the Sewer Utility is to enhance the health and quality of life for city residents by insuring that the collection, and treatment of the City's waste is performed in a cost effective and environmentally appropriate manner. This is done in compliance with EPA and TCEQ regulations.
Parks & Cemetery
The Public Works Department is responsible for properly maintaining the city's parks and the cemeteries in a manner consistent with the goals and objectives of the City Commission. This includes providing weed & grass removal, equipment and fencing maintenance and ongoing improvements to the facilities.
City Buildings and Property
The Public Works Department is responsible for properly maintaining city buildings and property in a manner consistent with the goals and objectives of the City Commission. This includes the removal of dilapidated property and maintenance of buildings and property held in the public trust.
