Electra' historic Grand Theatre at 114 N. Waggoner in downtown has been a community landmark since construction began in 1919. Designed by the Ft. Worth architectural firm of Meador and Wolf and constructed at a cost of $135,000, the Grand has been used for traveling troupes, silent films, talking pictures, and community theatre and events. It was recognized by Texas Historical Commission with Registered Texas Historical Landmark status in 2006, and marker placement was celebrated during Centennial celebrations in 2007.

Dinsmore Elementary students and friends participated in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s “THIS PLACE MATTERS!” project by posing at the historic Grand Theatre in downtown Electra.
By the 1980's, the theatre had fallen into serious disrepair. Deeded to the City of Electra in 1994, the Grand has become a community rehabilitation effort. In 2007 City Commissioners authorized the formation of a non-profit corporation and appointed board members to direct fundraising and rehabilitation efforts. The Board of Directors of Electra Grand Theatre, Inc. meets the second Wednesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall and welcomes interested volunteers. Information on the Grand is currently available through the City’s Main Street office at

Work on a major project at the Grand concluded in December 2009 with installation of a permanent floor and handicap accessible entry on the theatre’s south side. The $125,000 project is the result of over two years of work by friends and supporters of the Grand and was funded by many generous donations, memorials, Centennial Celebration proceeds from 2007, in-kind donations, successful fundraisers and major grants.
Much work remains to return this local architectural treasure to usefulness as a multipurpose community auditorium, entertainment and arts venue. To join in the effort to save the Grand for a new generation, call the Main Street office at
